What's Your Word for 2024?

During a recent Zoom call with agency owner peers, the idea of choosing a "word of the year" emerged in conversation.

This concept was entirely new to me and involves selecting a single word to encapsulate and steer the course of the upcoming 12 months. Moreover, the expectation is that you prominently display this word such that it becomes a daily guiding light, directing your actions toward a central goal or initiative.

Reflecting on this, I realized that I hadn't previously chosen a word for 2023.

In hindsight, it should have been something like "growth" or "learning," considering the abundance of these experiences throughout the year - something I am genuinely grateful for.

I can imagine the impact of seeing such a word every day, nudging me towards streamlining priorities and amplifying my influence in selected areas, instead of spreading myself thin across multiple tasks.

I’d imagine it would have also acted as a beacon on those more chaotic days, providing a consistent reference point to realign with.

We often talk about having “guiding” words or phrases, yet their real influence emerges only when we disrupt our routines and autopilot tendencies.

(If you’re like me, I’m sure you’ve experienced moments of arriving at work without recalling the commute due to being entirely consumed by the day ahead… That’s the behavior we’re looking to disrupt.)

Do this by placing a post-it note with your chosen word in unexpected spots - atop the coffee machine's start button, on your car's dashboard, or anywhere sure to interrupt your usual thoughts.

Selecting a word that aligns with your goals will help manifest a more unified, purposeful year ahead.

Let’s take a moment to acknowledge and appreciate the journey of 2023, then consider the word that will guide your path around the sun in the upcoming year.
