The Goal Reveals the Process

Think of goals like a maze. Small ones have many solution paths, creating noise and indecision. But big, complex goals reveal only one or two viable routes.

Hello!

In the spirit of strategic planning and goal setting for the upcoming year - let's apply 80/20 thinking to reveal the process for achieving ambitious goals.

Like a maze, small goals offer many paths creating noise and indecision. But big hairy audacious goals (as Jim Collins puts it) reveal few viable routes thanks to 80/20.

The 80/20 principle states 20% of causes drive 80% of outcomes, as 20% of customers drive 80% of sales.

When setting seemingly lofty goals (at least by the perception of our present selves), identify the 20% of activities fueling 80% of your current success.

Then, make those few things the “80%” of the total focus going forward.

For example:

Say your bold goal is to achieve 30% company growth in 18 months. That will likely require you to reinvent what works best now.

  • If 20% of your customers drive 80% of your revenue, how can you expand your offerings for those VIPs?

  • If 20% of your sales efforts drive 80% of your revenue, how can you develop processes and systems to go all-in on those efforts?

Big goals demand we zero-in on the vital 20% of activities that are driving the results, and then amplify our efforts accordingly. No other path would realistically achieve the “audacious” outcome we’re seeking.

The Point?

  • Big goals reveal few paths

  • Follow the 80/20 process those ambitious outcomes reveal

  • Eliminate the less productive 80% of distractions

In a maze with one exit, meandering is pointless no matter how appealing alternate routes appear.

Chase bold outcomes. Let your ambitious goals reveal the 80/20 journey required to achieve them.
