Recently, I was talking about the importance of surrounding yourself with the RIGHT people, and during the conversation, this quote surfaced: "…Because when you play with monsters, the things under your bed suddenly don't look so scary anymore..."

As busy professionals, we often underestimate the power of our inner circle.
The people we surround ourselves with can be the catalyst for exponential growth or the barnacles slowing our progress.
Let's explore how to build a network of "monsters" - individuals who challenge, inspire, and propel us towards our initiatives, rather than holding us back.
Why "Monsters" Matter
These aren't the creatures from childhood nightmares. They're the game-changers, the bar-raisers, the ones who've conquered the challenges you're facing.
By surrounding yourself with these high-achievers:

You're held accountable to your highest standards

Identifying Your "Monsters"
When setting out to find your monsters, look for individuals who embody these qualities:
They've walked your path: They've achieved what you're aiming for
They're invested in your success: They genuinely want to see you thrive and win
They challenge you: They push you out of your comfort zone
They maintain high standards: They don't let you settle for mediocrity
Building Your Monster Squad
(I couldn’t resist working in a “Monster Squad” reference, as that is one of my all-time favorite movies…)
Attend industry events: Networking isn't just about collecting business cards; it's about forging meaningful connections. Just be sure you’re putting yourself in the right rooms.
Leverage online platforms: Use LinkedIn or industry-specific forums to search out and connect with potential mentors and peers.
Join or create a mastermind group: Regular meetings with like-minded professionals can provide structure and accountability. I currently belong to an industry-specific group called TABLE for exactly this reason.
Seek out mentorship opportunities: Don't be afraid to reach out to those you admire. Many successful individuals are willing to guide others, and you’re only limited by your willingness to reach out.

Be proactive: Schedule regular check-ins or coffee meetings
Offer value: Make it a two-way street by contributing your own insights and support to their efforts
Stay accountable: Share your goals and progress regularly (I prefer twice daily. morning/night)
Express gratitude: Acknowledge the impact they're having on your growth. Fill them up for all the joy they are bringing to your life

Remember, when you surround yourself with giants, you're challenged to grow taller.
